Facebook Refocuses on Gaming

Lately it has been a joke that Facebook is becoming the stand alone Internet because all that is possible to do on it. However, this is increasingly becoming more and more of a reality. Once again Facebook is looking towards adding another new feature, this time by venturing into a market they had lost a few years ago, as TechCrunch’s Josh Constine reports.

Earlier this week Facebook released the beta bulid for its new desktop gaming platform called Gameroom, after months of development. It is an app that is separate from the native Facebook app. Users will be able to search games by title and category. In its beta form at the moment, Gameroom’s release is intended for game developers to begin to work on their games.

Gameroom’s direct competitor will be Valve’s Steam, a platform that has been very successful for many years without much competition. Previously Facebook had been a major platform for games such as Farmville and Bejewled but it soon lost its foothold to the emergence of mobile gaming. In order to succeed, Gameroom will likely need an exclusive killer app that proves its viability and can get its millions of users involved, which it will likely do via ads on the news feed.

Within the gaming world there is usually considered to be a separation between casual games (such as games on Facebook or on smartphones) and hardcore games (such as on Steam, Sony’s Playstation 4, and Microsoft’s Xbox One). It seems clear as though Facebook is intending to tap into Steam’s market of hardcore gamers yet has a massive user base that is much more varied. Gameroom could potentially blur the line between the two types of gamers.

  1. Facebook may have competition, but I can see this taking a pretty penny out of other game companies’ profits, especially if Facebook get the same titles, but sells them at a lower price – something it can afford to do.
