Bullying is one of the most radical problems facing our youth today. Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. One place where bullying occurs frequently is in the school lunchroom. Some students may not know anyone during their lunch period and may end up having to eat lunch all alone. This is very unfortunate and a problem that many students have experienced during their high school and college years.
There is now a solution to this problem; an app called “Sit with Us”. An article was released on September 12th by The Huffington Post titled “Teen Makes ‘Sit with us’ App That Helps Students Find Lunch Buddies”. The article announced that a new app was created to help students who have trouble finding a place to sit in the lunchroom find a group of friends to eat lunch with. The app was created by a 16-year old girl, who said that she created the app because she ate lunch alone for an entire year in high school and did not want others to have to suffer like she did. The app allows students to become “ambassadors” where they can invite others to join them by posting “open lunch” events, which means that anyone is invited to eat lunch with them. Now students who do not have a table to eat lunch at can go on this app and find friends to eat lunch with, without being publicly rejected. “Sit with us” encourages students to make new friends, and can help reduce bullying.
This 16-year old girl may have a huge impact towards the fight against bullying. In the past, social media has caused bullying to become more relevant because of social media and cyberbullying, but this can all change because of the “Sit with Us” app. It is incredible how social media can now have a positive effect, and can help reduce the bullying rates among our youth and teens across the country.
